One of the more interesting legacies born from extended periods of relatively high fuel prices are the ways that we, as consumers, can increase the efficiency of our vehicles. Studies have shown that even up through about $4.50/gal. we would prefer to scavenge for the cheapest fuel or some other quick fix rather than actually alter our driving behavior or choice of transportation. As such, during times like these questions regarding topics like fuel additives, tire inflation, car cleanliness, and use of A/C vs. open windows to name a few, get extra attention in the "Autos" columns.
To stick with fuel additives for just a minute, many of the purpose-built concoctions found at the neighborhood auto supply store have secured a less than favorable reputation from industry folk and consumers alike. Lacking the equipment, time, or gumption to independently test them myself, I am left (like the rest of drivers out there) to go by what I hear, see, and read to make a conclusion on their value.
Another fuel additive, which for many people has not been quite so easy to dismiss, however, is pure Acetone, which has found favor by many satisfied and vocal motorists as an easy method to increase one's fuel efficiency. And like all decent conspiracy theories, this one lacks a simple and definitive "yes, it works" or "no, its about as credible as that 1,000 lbs. wild pig that sorry Alabama family killed" proof we crave. Meaning, like the grassy knoll, UFOs and Nessie, you are on your own to weigh the evidence and decide for yourself.
There are several things that make the Acetone debate so intriguing including the fact that you don't need to have a laboratory in your basement to use it. According to its proponents, simply pour 2-3 oz. pure Acetone (found at your local hardware store) in with each 10 gallons of regular gasoline and see your mileage increase by up to 35% per some compelling graphs found easily online. Now, for most people, the first thought is sure, this might cause some crazy chemical reaction that temporarily gives you a boost, but what on earth is it doing to the inside of your engine or the environment for that matter when you do so.
And the backers have quick answers to these concerns as well, stating that the acetone eliminates the surface tension of normal fuel, which restricts its ability to vaporize completely. Therefore, the Acetone-laced fuel burns cleaner and more efficiently, leading not only to better mileage, but a reduction in hydrocarbon emissions by up to a claimed 60% or so. Boy, cheap, easy to use/procure, benefits all around, this is starting to sound good. So where is the catch?
Admittedly, the initial negatives associated with using Acetone as an additive are no where near as convincing as the positives and include arguments like, Acetone is a solvent, if you get it on your hands or paint, you will be sorry. Or, if you pump 25 gallons of straight Acetone with no fuel into your vehicle and let it sit for a year, you may experience some slight degradation of plastic or rubber components within your fuel system. And while these are terribly compelling, they also make the one argument that actually matters, whether or not it actually works.
There are plenty of anecdotal facts and figures listed with all types of vehicles stating observed benefits in mileage and performance, but there are some real industry people who have claimed to have tested Acetone without any gains whatsoever. Now, here is where your personal interpretation comes into play. Some arguments suggest that not all fuels are equal (for example, some states use more additives or different blends) and that the Acetone may work better with some fuels than with others. Also, some vehicles use more effective fuel injection systems than other, which may influence or otherwise limit its usefullness.
My personal favorite argument is that certainly, any substance, cheap, expensive, easy to find, hard to find, etc... that could drastically cut into the oil companies profits would be seen as a threat. However, it would take maybe all of an afternoon by some staffer to easily implement a slander campaign online that might effectively squash any chance of Acetone (or any other additive) from seeing widespread utilization.

Many have tried and failed to stimulate isomeric isotopes into emitting high energy photons enough to serve as a gain medium and produce a coherent gamma ray beam that might serve as a laser for purposes civil and military. Princeton's Richard Wheeler surfaced the idea of matter-antimatter annihilation in positronium serving this purpose decades ago, but only now have electron-positron molecules been observed to condense into quantum states of technological use in applications as diverse as space propulsion and medicine.
Spin exchange quenching of molecular species containing antimatter may lead to stable Bose-Einstein condensates of materials like Dipositronium, making possible stored energy densities vastly higher than today's, and coherent emission at wavelengths short enough to image -- and 'optically' pump-- nuclear quantum states, yielding advances comparable to those stemming from the discovery of x-rays or nuclear magnetic resonance

All sentences are about something or anyone. The something or another person that the sentence is about is known as the topic with the sentence. Out of your blog, I see that, and review one thing I'd like. Thanks for sharing.
