We are constantly on the look-out for interesting automotive service and repair news, which you can imagine is typically hard to come by. When we heard that there was a new Comedy Central mockumentary parody of the numerous "Tuner" and aftermarket shows currently on TV, it seemed an ideal semi-related industry topic.
On paper, the show has merit. I mean, what better environment could you find as a backdrop to highlight a running social commentary than the stereotypical garage laced with more than their share of cultural diversity, work-time high jinks, slap-stick setting and nudey calendars? The only problem is that the show seems to be having trouble, er, getting started.
Billed as a "The Office" meets "American Hot Rod," "American Body Shop" stalled right from the get-go. Seen as another "Reno, 911!" in a different setting, ABS apparently fails to deliver more than a few tasteless jokes and silly physical humor. With a little luck the story lines may get better, but with this week's episode focusing around a Catholic bishop who hit someone with drunk driving, we are left to wonder.
Show creator, ASU graduate Sam Greene admits that the show unfortunately isn't about cars but rather they people who work there (the body shop), though a bit more automotive content would be a welcomed addition. Interestingly, Sam created his own pilot, which he sent to several studios including Comedy Central leading to plenty of DIY comparisons.
